Can you remove a Google review? What actually works

You cannot delete a review just because it is unfair or you disagree with it. Google removes reviews that break its policies, like spam, fake reviews, off-topic rants or hateful language.

Step by step

  1. Check if it breaks a policy. Spam or fake content, off-topic, offensive or hateful words, conflicts of interest (a competitor or an ex-employee), or personal information. A bad but honest review does not qualify.
  2. Report it from your Business Profile. Open the review, tap the three dots and choose Report review, or use Google’s Reviews Management Tool and choose “Report a new review for removal”.
  3. Pick the right reason. Choose the policy it breaks. One clear reason works better than reporting everything.
  4. Check the status. The Reviews Management Tool shows “Decision pending”, “Report reviewed, no policy violation”, or “Escalated” if you appealed.
  5. Appeal once if needed. If Google finds no violation, you can appeal one time with more detail. Google sends the final decision by email.

If the review stays up

Reply to it calmly and fix what you can. A thoughtful reply under a harsh review often reassures new guests more than a perfect score. Then bring in more recent reviews from happy guests so one review weighs less.

Never pay for removal

Be careful with services that promise to remove reviews for a fee. Google decides based on its policies, and no one can guarantee removal.

Questions owners ask

How long does Google take to decide?

It varies. The Reviews Management Tool shows the status, and Google emails the result after an appeal.

Can I sue over a review?

That is a legal question for a lawyer. In most cases a calm reply and more good reviews work better and faster.
